Why induction is fussy about pans
An induction hob does not heat itself. It generates a magnetic field that induces currents in the pan, and the pan heats up. That means the pan has to be ferromagnetic - it has to respond to a magnet - and it has to have a flat base making real contact with the glass.
Two consequences follow. Aluminum and copper do not work on their own, which rules out most coated cookware. And a warped or domed base couples badly even in a magnetic pan, which matters more here than on gas. The magnet test
Hold a fridge magnet against the base of the pan. If it grabs firmly, the pan works on induction. If it slides off or holds weakly, it does not, whatever the listing says.
This is worth doing in a shop and worth doing on arrival, because listings in this category are unreliable. "Induction ready" is a marketing phrase with no agreed definition, and it appears on sets where some pieces are compatible and others are not.
The partial-compatibility trap
This is the specific failure mode to watch for, and it is why a set matters more than a single pan here. Mixed-material sets frequently pair clad stainless pots with aluminum or hard-anodized coated skillets. The pots are magnetic; the skillets are not.

Why fully clad is the right answer here
A fully clad pan has a magnetic stainless exterior layer that runs across the base and up the sides, which is what makes it induction compatible, and an aluminum core that spreads the heat. That construction solves both of induction's demands at once.
A disc-bottom pan can also be induction compatible, because the disc includes a magnetic layer. It works, but it heats only in the disc, so sauces scorch in a ring at the edge - the argument in disc bottom versus fully clad. Induction makes that worse rather than better, because the heat is generated in the magnetic layer rather than spread from a flame.
Induction is also the case where base flatness genuinely matters. A warped base rocks and couples poorly, which is why a warp is a terminal fault on an induction hob and merely an annoyance on gas - when to replace your cookware has the thresholds.
Base diameter and the hob
Induction hobs have a minimum base diameter they will detect, typically around four to five inches, and small pans are the common casualty - a 1 qt saucepan or a small milk pan may simply not register. Check the hob's specification if your set includes small pieces.
At the other end, a pan much wider than the induction zone heats only where the coil is, which produces the ring pattern people mistake for a faulty pan. Match pan to zone the same way you would match pan to burner on an electric stove.
Beyond the set
