The short answer
HexClad publishes tri-ply construction with an aluminum core, a laser-etched hexagonal stainless pattern over a proprietary TerraBond ceramic nonstick coating, published free of PTFE and PFAS, dishwasher safe, metal-utensil safe, and oven safe to 900F. It also publishes that the pan must be seasoned, and that its lifetime warranty excludes damage from excessive heat and from lack of seasoning. Those last three facts sit oddly together, and they are the honest center of this review.

What the hex pattern actually is
The pan is tri-ply - stainless, aluminum core, stainless - with a hexagonal grid laser etched into the cooking surface so that raised stainless ridges stand proud of recessed valleys. The valleys carry the nonstick coating; the ridges are bare steel.
That geometry is the whole product, and it explains the one genuine advantage: a metal spatula rides on the raised steel and does not reach the coating in the valleys. This is why HexClad can publish metal-utensil safe where a flat coated pan cannot.
It also explains the limit. The coating in the valleys is an ordinary coating. It is not protected from heat, from detergent or from time - only from the spatula. Coatings have no published lifespan from any maker, which is the subject of how long nonstick lasts.

The 900F question
Nine hundred degrees Fahrenheit is an extraordinary number. For context, every other coated pan in our ledger publishes between 400F and 550F, and the bare clad pans publish 500F to 800F. A domestic oven does not reach 900F and a broiler element radiates high but the cavity does not sit there.
We cannot test it and we are not going to pretend the number is false. What we can say is what is missing: there is no published test method, no stated duration, and no statement of whether the figure describes the pan surviving the temperature or the coating continuing to release at it. Those are different claims.
The practical reading: treat 900F as a statement about the steel, not about the coating, and cook the pan the way you would cook any coated pan. The company's own warranty excludes damage from excessive heat, which suggests it agrees.
The warranty, read properly
HexClad publishes a lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects and then excludes, in its own words, damage from "excessive heat, abuse, neglect, improper storage, misuse of sharp utensils, improper cleaning or lack of seasoning."
"Excessive heat" is undefined, on a pan whose headline specification is a 900F rating.
"Lack of seasoning" is an exclusion, on a pan sold on the convenience of nonstick.
"Misuse of sharp utensils" sits beside a published metal-utensil-safe claim.
Coating wear is not listed as covered, which is consistent with the entire category and is how coated pans actually die.
None of that makes the warranty unusual. Lifetime cookware warranties almost universally exclude the part that fails, which we set out in cookware warranties explained. It does mean the warranty is not the reason to buy.
Who this is genuinely for
Buy it if
You want release and refuse to change your utensil habits.
You want a coated pan that goes in a dishwasher without an argument.
You want PTFE-free and will pay for it.
You will actually do the published seasoning step.
Skip it if
You want a pan with no wear surface at all. The hex pattern protects the coating from a spatula and from nothing else - buy it for life cookware.
You are buying it to sear. Bare clad or cast iron does that better and costs less - best pans for searing steak.
You treat coated pans as consumables. Then the premium is money spent on a pan you intend to throw away.
Country of manufacture matters to you, because it is not published.
Is HexClad a scam?
No, and the question deserves a straight answer rather than a dodge. It is a real tri-ply pan with a real coating and a real, unusual design feature that does what it claims: a metal spatula will not reach the coating.
What is fair to criticize is the gap between the marketing and the specification sheet. The pan is advertised as combining stainless, cast iron and nonstick. It is a clad pan with a coating, and the coating wears like every other coating. Buying it understanding that is a reasonable decision; buying it believing you have bought a permanent pan is not.

The trade-off. It is PTFE. That is fine at normal cooking temperatures, and it is not a pan to preheat empty on high.
Skip this if. You want to avoid PTFE entirely. Buy ceramic instead and accept the shorter release life rather than pretending either one lasts forever.
If you specifically want a coated pan you can use metal utensils in and put in a dishwasher, it is one of only two honest answers - the other being seasoned carbon steel. If you want a permanent pan, the coating in the valleys still wears and clad stainless or cast iron is the better buy.
