Three materials genuinely last a lifetime: bare cast iron, carbon steel and fully clad stainless. None has a wear surface - the cooking surface is the metal itself, so damage is repairable rather than terminal. Everything coated is a consumable, whatever the warranty says, because coatings wear and no maker publishes a lifespan. Enameled cast iron sits in between: the iron is permanent and the enamel can chip. Buy clad stainless and iron for the pans you keep, and buy coated pans cheaply on the assumption you will replace them.

The test: does the pan have a wear surface?
This is the only question that matters, and it sorts the entire category in one pass.
A wear surface is a layer applied to the pan that is not the pan. A non-stick coating, a ceramic sol-gel layer, an anodized skin. It performs better than bare metal when new, it degrades with use, and when it is gone the pan underneath is not the pan you bought.
A pan with no wear surface cooks on its own metal. Scratch it and it is a scratched pan that still works. Strip it and you can rebuild it. Warp it and it can sometimes be flattened. There is no state it can reach where it stops being what you bought.

Everything in the bottom three rows is a consumable. That is not a criticism of them - it is what they are, and buying them accordingly is the whole point of this page.
The four ways cookware actually dies
1. The coating wears out
Much the most common, and entirely predictable. No maker publishes a coating lifespan, which tells you what you need to know - how long nonstick lasts collects what the industry does and does not say.
2. The base warps
Caused by thermal shock, almost always: a hot pan into cold water, or an empty thin pan on high heat. A warped base rocks on a flat stovetop and makes an electric or induction hob nearly unusable. Thin pans warp; thick and clad ones mostly do not.
3. The handle fails
Riveted handles loosen over years and can usually be tightened. Welded and spot-welded handles fail without warning and cannot be repaired. Screwed-on plastic handles are the most repairable of all if the maker still sells the part - which is a genuine question to ask before buying.
4. Enamel chips through
A chip on the outside is cosmetic. A chip inside the cooking area exposes bare iron that will rust and is no longer non-reactive, and enamel cannot be repaired at home. This is the one failure that ends an otherwise permanent pot - enameled cast iron care.
"Lifetime warranty" is not the same as buy-it-for-life
Lifetime warranties are close to universal in this category and they almost never cover the part that fails.
Coating wear is excluded essentially everywhere, and coating wear is how coated pans die.
"Limited lifetime" means limited, and the limits are in the exclusions rather than the headline.
Misuse clauses are broad. Overheating, dishwasher use where the maker says hand wash, metal utensils on a coating.
Proof of purchase is usually required, a decade later.
A warranty is a claim about the manufacturer's confidence in materials and assembly, and it is worth reading as that. It is not a promise that the pan lasts. The exclusions each brand in our ledger publishes are cataloged in cookware warranties explained.

That is a kitchen that cooks essentially everything and contains nothing that wears out. Add one cheap coated skillet for eggs, treat it as a consumable, and you have the honest version of a lifetime set. The full sequencing argument is in what you actually need.

One good open-stock stainless pan bought instead of a cheap full set
Cast iron made in the 1940s is still in daily use, and it sells for less than new premium iron. Nothing about a rusted skillet is terminal: rust comes off, seasoning is rebuilt, and the pan is then exactly as good as it ever was.
Clad stainless is also worth buying used, because there is nothing to wear out and damage is visible. What is not worth buying used is anything coated, because you cannot assess the remaining coating life and the seller cannot tell you.
One caution on vintage. Very old pans occasionally carry decorative or repaired surfaces of unknown composition, and pre-war enamelware is not covered by any modern materials standard. Buy bare iron used with confidence; be more careful with old enamel.
Habits that decide it more than the purchase does
Never run cold water into a hot pan. The single most common cause of warping across every material.
Do not preheat thin pans empty on high. Thermal mass is what tolerates that, and thin pans have none.
Read the dishwasher guidance rather than assuming. It varies by brand within the same material - dishwasher safe cookware.
Store so nothing nests directly on a cooking surface. A pan rack, or cloth between stacked pans.

The trade-off. Handles are the weak point. They are riveted and sturdy, but they get hot on a gas ring in a way the more expensive clad brands' do not.
